This Chocolate Dulce de Leche Cake is filled with a thick caramel and fluffy frosting, then topped with toffee bits and extra dulce de leche!
When you need a show-stopping dessert, this chocolate cake is sure to drop jaws and have people begging for the recipe!
BONUS – it’s actually a super simple cake to put together!
Remember back when I shared this Instant Pot Dulce de Leche and Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting recipes with you? I was slowly getting you ready for this cake. So here it is, in all it’s delicious glory!
My sister-in-law originally made this gorgeous cake for my mother-in-law’s birthday, and everyone devoured it. I knew I had to share it with you guys, so I had her create it again just for you guys!
Easy Chocolate Cake Mix Hacks
Did you know you can turn a basic cake mix into a bakery style cake with these simple hacks:
- Add pudding mix to make it a little more dense.
- Mix in sour cream to make it extra moist.
- Use milk instead of water.
- Add one extra egg to the mix for an extra rich cake.
You’ll be shocked at just how much of a difference those little hacks will make to your chocolate cake.
One of my other big tips when baking a cake, is to use bake even strips. This will result in flat topped cakes so you don’t have to do any trimming of your cake to get those even layers. It’s a game changer.
How to fill a layer cake:
The filling on this chocolate cake is actually two things – a layer of dulce de leche and a layer of dulce de leche frosting.
You’ll frost one of the chocolate cake layers with the cream cheese frosting and another layer with the dulce de leche, then sandwich them together and frost the outside with the chocolate cream cheese frosting.
Feel free to decorate the outside of your cake in any fashion that you see fit, but I definitely recommend the extra drizzle of dulce de leche and toffee bits on top.
The combination of the two cream cheese frostings is what really sets this cake apart. I mean, I could eat the frostings on their own, but holy cow, when combined with the cake and extra dulce de leche… have mercy.
I sincerely hope you find a reason to make this chocolate cake very soon!
I just know you’re going to love it.

Chocolate Dulce de Leche Cake
Ingredients
For the Chocolate Cake:
- 1 15.25oz Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix
- 1 3.9 oz box instant chocolate pudding
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup sour cream, may substitute greek yogurt
- ½ cup olive oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 recipe Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting
For the Dulce de Leche Cream Cheese Frosting:
- 4 oz. cream cheese, cold
- 1 cup butter, room temperature
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 4-5 cups powdered sugar
- ½ cup thick dulce de leche caramel
For the Toppings and Filling:
- 3/4 cup thick dulce de leche caramel, divided
- 1/4 cup heath toffee bits
Instructions
For the Cake:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease two 9 inch round cake pans, and sprinkle each pan with 1 Tb of flour.
- Mix cake mix, pudding mix, eggs, milk, sour cream, oil, and vanilla together for ONE minute. Do not over beat as it will result in lumpy cake.
- Divide evenly into the two 8 or 9 inch round pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely and refrigerate before frosting, at least 2 hours or overnight.
For the Dulce de Leche Cream Cheese Frosting:
- Cream the butter and cream cheese until light and fluffy then add in the vanilla. Add the powdered sugar in ½ cup intervals, mixing between each addition, then beat in 1/2 cup of the dulce de leche until fully combined.
Assemble the Cake:
- Once cakes are chilled, frost the top of one cake with a layer of dulce de leche frosting. Spread the other cake top with 1/2 cup of dulce de leche caramel and layer the cakes together so that the caramel and frosting are together between the cakes (like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.)
- Frost the outside and top of entire layered cake with chocolate frosting. Decorate with dulce de leche frosting as you see fit. Drizzle top of cake with dulce de leche caramel and sprinkle with heath bar toffee bits. Enjoy!
